چکیده

Please cite this article in press as: Stoter, J., et al ment and Urban Systems (2009), doi:10.1016/j.c This paper presents a methodology developed for a study to evaluate the state of the art of automated map generalization in commercial software without applying any customization. The objectives of this study are to learn more about generic and specific requirements for automated map generalization, to show possibilities and limitations of commercial generalization software, and to identify areas for further research. The methodology had to consider all types of heterogeneity to guarantee independent testing and evaluation of available generalization solutions. The paper presents the two main steps of the methodology. The first step is the analysis of map requirements for automated generalization, which consisted of sourcing representative test cases, defining map specifications in generalization constraints, harmonizing constraints across the test cases, and analyzing the types of constraints that were defined. The second step of the methodology is the evaluation of generalized outputs. In this step, three evaluation methods were integrated to balance between human and machine evaluation and to expose possible inconsistencies. In the discussion the applied methodology is evaluated and areas for further research are identified. 2009 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Automated schematization using memetic algorithms

Mapping is a way of visualizing parts of the world and maps are largely diagrammatic and two dimensional. There is usually a one-to-one correspondence between places in the world and places on the map, but while there are limitless aspects to the world, the cartographer can only select a few to map (Dorling, 1996). Map generalization is required when there is a need to represent geographic info...

Combining Attribute with Geometry for Automated Generalization and Schematisation

Map Generalization is the process by which coarse scale maps are to be derived from fine scale maps, balancing the amount of real-world information with visual confusion. This requires the use of operations such as simplification, selection, displacement and amalgamation of features that are performed subsequent to scale change. Map schematization can be regarded as a specific type of map gener...

An automatic test case generator for evaluating implementation of access control policies

One of the main requirements for providing software security is the enforcement of access control policies which aim to protect resources of the system against unauthorized accesses. Any error in the implementation of such policies may lead to undesirable outcomes. For testing the implementation of access control policies, it is preferred to use automated methods which are faster and more relia...

Research on Strategy for Automated Scaleless-Map Compilation

As a tool for human spatial cognition and thinking, the map has been playing an important role. Maps are perhaps as fundamental to society as language and the written word. Economic and social development requires extensive and in-depth understanding of their own living environment, from the scope of the overall global to urban housing. This has brought unprecedented opportunities and challenge...

An Adaptive Methodology for Automated Relief Generalization

Digital Elevation Models (DEM) are used in a wide range of applications. Several institutions worldwide are now involved in the collection of DEM data. OEMs are generally compiled at large scales (e.g. 1:25,000) with high accuracy. However, users frequently require data at different scales and for differing purposes (e.g. analysis, display etc.). To derive models at reduced scales, a generaliza...
